Katharine Graham, chairman with the executive committee with the Washington Post Corporation and also the author of Private History, a memoir for which she received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Biography, died July 17 at age 84.
Graham, who has been dubbed “one with the most potent females in American media,” and “one with the twentieth century’s most effective and fascinating girls,” served as chairman with the board with the Washington Post Firm for 20 years prior to becoming chairman with the executive committee in September 1993. She held other titles like chief executive officer and president following serving as the publisher with the Washington Post newspaper from 1969 to 1979.
Graham will probably be sorely missed in Washington and all more than the nation.
“It appears unthinkable that can not be there anymore,” stated writer Sally Quinn in a current CNN interview.
Ben Bradlee, Vice President with the Washington Post Organization, mentioned, “She had a great deal of enjoyable and created other people have a great deal of enjoyable in the similar time.”
Quinn, who referred to Graham as “Kay,” the name she was identified to several by, also mentioned, “She worked tougher than anybody I ever knew.”
Graham was born on June 16, 1917, in New York City to Agnes Ernst Meyer and Eugene Meyer, who bought The Washington Post at a bankruptcy sale in 1933.
She graduated from the University of Chicago in 1938 and worked as a reporter for the San Francisco News prior to joining the staff with the Washington Post. She married Philip Graham in 1940, and in 1945 left the Post to raise her family members of 4 kids.
Following her husband committed suicide in 1963, Katharine Graham in the age of 46 assumed manage with the Washington Post Corporation.
She “transformed the lackadaisical everyday into among the powerhouses of journalism. She stood as much as government, publishing the Pentagon Papers, which revealed U.S. bungling in Southeast Asia. She gave two reporters the OK to look at a minor break-in in the Watergate — an investigation that toppled a president — and backed them regardless of intense White Residence pressure,” based on lifetimetv.com.
Talking about her choice to publish the Pentagon Papers and related undaunted possibilities, Bradlee mentioned, “Her instinct of what exactly is appropriate and what’s incorrect was finely tuned.”
Quinn added that Graham had the “guts of a burglar,” and “She enjoyed the high wire act – she in no way flinched.”
Lifetimetv.com also says: “At the age of 80, Graham won a Pulitzer Prize for her absorbing memoir, “Personal History,” in which she bared her anguish about her husband’s mental illness, her conflicts about combining motherhood and function and her insecurities about her potent role.”
